HDPE Geocell compare to 3D Geomat

One day, one of my customers in Thailand told me below information:

The designers in our country do not like geocell they think gecell adds weight on the slope and may cause of sliding on the surface than using erosion mat. They prefer erosion mats due to easy to install and not increasing soil weight on the topping slope. How to fight with erosion mat?

Regarding this question, I have consulted with our engineer, please check the answers as follows:

1, Geocells with a height of 10cm or 15cm are generally used on slopes. Geocells not only can fix the soil but also allow the roots of vegetation to be fixed very well. The Geomat can only cover the soil on the slope surface. If the erosion is slightly serious, it will cause surface soil loss. This is the most important advantage for Geocell than Geomat.

2, Soil Properties. If the soil of the slope is clayey, Geomat can also be used. If it is sandy soil, the Geomat will not be effective, but Geocell has a very good performance.

3, Slope Angle. The slope angle is also very important for selection. If the slope is ≥45°, it is a must to use Geocell, as the Geomat will not work. Geocell can be designed for a slope degree than 75°.

Geocell tendon for slope
Geocell for steep slope

All in all, on a slope protection project, it depends on many factors to design Geocell or Geomat.  And it also depends on the engineer’s mind. We can’t change their mind, but we can provide some successful case studies to them for reference.
