How to test the Seam peel strength of HDPE Geocell?

As we all know, for ultrasonic welding HDPE Geocell, seam peel strength is the most important value. And the ASTM standard seam peel strength is ≥14.2KN/m( 142N/cm), and the GB standard (Chinese standard) seam peel strength is ≥10KN/m( 100N/cm). For HDPE Geocell height(or called Geocell depth) we can produce from 50mm to 300mm, so please check the total Geocell seam peel strength based on different heights as follows:

GB standard = seam peel strength ≥10KN/m( 100N/cm).

50mm seam peel strength ≥500N
100mm seam peel strength ≥1000N
150mm seam peel strength ≥1500N
200mm seam peel strength ≥2000N
250mm seam peel strength ≥2500N
300mm seam peel strength ≥3000N

ASTM standard = seam peel strength ≥14.2KN/m( 142N/cm)

50mm seam peel strength ≥710N
100mm seam peel strength ≥1420N
150mm seam peel strength ≥2130N
200mm seam peel strength ≥2840N
250mm seam peel strength ≥3550N
300mm seam peel strength ≥4260N

Based on the above data, some customers still want to know more details about how to test the seam peel strength of HDPE Geocell and they also ask can we give them some instructions or methods that they can test on their side?

One day, I received three questions from one of my Korean customers, he asked below questions:

Question one: One more question, the technician wanted to see the basis why seam peel strength should be 14.2KN per the height 100mm?

# My Answer: The standard for seam peel strength 14.2KN/m is based on ASTM standard(USACE GL-86-19).

Question two: If it is based on ASTM, please let me know the details because there is no standard in our country and further let us know how can test the seam peel strength and tensil strength in our side? because our lab does not know it.

#My Answer: For the testing of Geocell seam peel strength, they have 2 methods, one testing method is USACE GL-86-19, another one is ISO 13426-1 Method B, and they can get the same results. For the testing of tensile strength, the testing method is ASTM D638.

Question three: One more request, please send us the related clause for USACE GL – 86 – 19 as a testing method for Seam Peel Strength because we could not find it by googling.

#My Answer: Seam Peel Strength testing by GL-86-19 was invented by the US Army Corps of Engineers, for more details you can check below photo. And our engineer said USACE GL-86-19 is the same for ISO 13426-1 Method B, and they both use universal tensile testing machines. They are equivalent and the result is the same.
