Geocell Retaining Wall Quantity Calculation

Below is an inquiry I received in the year 2020, from a Vertical Hydroponic Farm Constructors in the UK, which wants to use our Geocell to install a Geocell wall to support the site ecology.

We have been reviewing your products online and require further information on your Geocell Retaining Wall products.

As a brief introduction, we are a Vertical Hydroponic Farm Constructors, we have a number of sites across Europe and beyond.

One of our sites requires a retaining wall, 174 meters long and 1.2 meters high, and would like to install a Geocell wall to support the site ecology.

What we require urgently is the product detail and a formal quote to supply.

Thanks for your email and concern, hope you are fine too.

Yes, I trust I can help you well. The most popular Geocell type used on retaining wall is 200-660(height 200mm, welding 660mm) textured and perforated type, and due to Geocells will be exposed under the sun, so must use the best quality ASTM standard, with ESCR ≥5000hrs, and OIT ≥ 150min, I have attached our Tech-data in attachment, you can see all the specifications in details.

As for the price, I also can quote you very soon, but let’s calculate the quantity first. Your project is 174 meters long and 1.2 meters high, if use 200mm Geocells, need to construct 6 layers, how about the width? If you know the width, please tell us, then we can calculate the expanded area size and total quantity.

Thank you for your prompt response, it is much appreciated.

I Understand that we need 6 layers, we have not got a width to work to, we are constructing in an open field, but would like to keep the structure as steep as possible to keep it as narrow as possible…..if that makes sense.

Sir, based on your information and requirements, we recommend using 4 cells as your project width. In your construction project, it is called width, but for Geocell it is called expanded section length(Geocell overlap direction).

For Geocell HF200-660, the expanded cell size is 470*450mm, and the largest Geocell width we can produce is 14 cells. Then,
Expanded section width is: 0.47*14=6.58m
Expanded section width is: 0.45*4=1.8m
Expanded section area is 6.58*1.8=11.85m2/pc

Your project length is 174/6.58, which will need 27 pcs for each layer, total of 6 layers, then the total quantity is 27*6=162 pcs, total area of 27*6*11.85=1919.7m2.
